March STARS

Jordan Montes, Elizabeth Smith and Patricia Tanner are Elko County School District’s March STARS — or Staff and Teachers Achieving Results with Students — award recipients.

These staff members have demonstrated dedication to students, a passion for teaching and a commitment to creating positive and supportive learning environments.

Jordan Montes

Montes, a social studies teacher and student council advisor at Elko High School, was nominated by student Daniela Luna.

Luna described Montes as a teacher who goes above and beyond for her students. “She is the kind of advisor who is present for her students in every way, supportive, uplifting and dedicated, no matter the circumstances,” Luna wrote.

Montes is recognized for her commitment to student leadership and involvement. “She motivates us to dream big and take pride in what we do,” Luna wrote. “She always makes sure every student’s voice is heard.”

Her impact extends beyond the classroom. “She doesn’t just teach leadership; she models it every single day,” the nomination stated.

Elizabeth Smith

Smith, a first-grade teacher at West Wendover Elementary School, was nominated by parent Amanda Mosteller.

Mosteller shared how Smith helped transform her child’s experience at school. “Her teacher went far beyond what would normally be expected to help my daughter feel comfortable, supported and excited about learning,” Mosteller wrote.

Because of Smith’s care and dedication, the student’s outlook changed significantly. “Less than a year later, she wakes up excited and eager to go to class every single day,” the nomination read.

Smith is also known for building lasting relationships. “Children from several years ago clearly remember the positive impact she had on them and continue to seek her out,” Mosteller wrote.

Patricia Tanner

Tanner, a social studies teacher at Spring Creek Middle School, was nominated by student Sophie Rodriguez.

Rodriguez described Tanner as kind and engaging in the classroom. “I like how Mrs. Tanner taught, she used her real-life experiences to make Social Studies fun,” Rodriguez wrote.

Tanner’s care for students continues beyond the classroom. “When I see her she always takes the time to say hi,” Rodriguez wrote. “She really was one of the best teachers.”

This recognition is made possible through the generosity of LeeAnne’s Floral Designs, Orla Mining, Dos Amigos, Maverick Gaming, Sugar y Spice, The Star, Fratelli Pizza and the Rotary Club of Elko Desert Sunrise.

Staff, students and community members are encouraged to nominate any school district employee who demonstrates exceptional commitment and performance in serving students. The nomination form is available on the STARS webpage on the Elko County School District website.
